Weight Loss Summer Camp

Finding a good weight loss summer camp, is easier today than a few years ago. Summer weight loss camps today are less about being "fat camps" and more about being a fitness camp and learning healthy lifestyle habits.

Most summer weight loss camps combine ample activity with good nutrition and confidence building. It is important to attend for a few weeks if your goal is to actually change your appearance, because change and behavior do not happen overnight. Most camps agree that a three to four week stay is a good start, and provides the time needed to begin to change your pattern of eating and exercising. And, the exercise options at most camps are fun! There are so many choices that everyone is bound to find something that they love.

Look for camps that have follow-up programs for when you return home. Some have actual counselors or nutritionists checking in with you by phone, others provide online services, newsletters, and menus. Many weight loss camps even provide a monetary incentive if you maintain your weight!

According to IRS Revenue Ruling 202-19, weight loss program costs may be tax deductible. Ruling 202-19 allows for the deduction of weight loss camp tuition if participation was the result of a doctor’s prescription.

Most insurance companies do not define obesity itself as an illness and will not cover the cost of camp. Insurance coverage may be available, however, if a physician refers your child to camp to treat one of the host of obesity related medical conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a sleep disorder.

Some weight loss programs provide counseling sessions that are integral to their camps, and that are reimbursable through your insurance company. Many camps will help you determine your potential deductible, and some camps will provide loans to help finance your tuition.
